Brilliant Anti-Tank (BAT) Submunition Decelerator

The BAT, produced by Northrop Grumman, is an acoustic and infrared (IR) guided submunition that autonomously searches for, tracks and defeats armored and critical mobile targets. The BAT is a propulsionless, aerodynamically controlled vehicle (glider). The BAT is delivered to the target vicinity by the Army Tactical Missile System (Army TACMS), which is launched from the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
Ballute Decelerator Demonstration Program
Working with Primex Aerospace (Now General Dynamics Ordinance and Tactical Systems - Aerospace Operations) ILC Dover explored several gas generator inflated ballute approaches to decelerate and stabilize the BAT submunition.

  • Mach 2.5 Environment
  • 30o Angle of Attack
  • 140 psi Ops Pressure (80 psi for Flair)
  • 27 Millisecond Inflation

Internal Structure BAT Finute
The high inflation pressure and complex shape of the BAT finute dictated a robust coating and internal webbing and spars. The resultant structure was packed into the ballute can with the aid of a specially designed hydraulic ram to develop a packing efficiency of 60%.
