Radiation Protection - ILC Dover

Radiation Protection

We have been studying radiation protective materials for space suits for over 20 years to find better ways to protect astronauts from radiation exposure. We have developed and tested materials such as Tungsten loaded silicone, various forms of polyethylene, borated polyethylene, and carbon nano-tube enhancement of polymer substrates. We have studied and prototyped ways to integrate these materials into space suits, make re-configurable radiation protective blankets, and also create water jacket radiation shields. Our team has also developed concepts for inflatable structures that can lift and support regolith on the moon to create permanent radiation safe-havens.
