Smart Reflector Hexapod
ILC worked with Tennessee State University and NASA LaRC to produce a smart structures test-bed to study damping and shape control of a tensioned membrane optical reflector. Piezoelectric patch actuators were embedded in the rigidizable support structure at prescribed locations. Excitation of the actuators in a controlled method could dampen vibrations in the assembly or alter the micro-position of the secondary.
ILC designed and manufactured the 3.2m diameter hexapod with embedded actuators and secondary mount. We also manufactured the reflector assembly with a perimeter catenary, and adjustable tensioning system. ILC supported laboratory and thermal vacuum chamber positioning and flatness testing at LaRC.
