ILC Dover has been involved in the design and development of high-altitude airships since the early 1980s supporting development programs for the Navy, NASA, DoD contractors, and commercial customers.
The subsequent growth of the cellular phone market and more recently, wide-band internet demand, has generated renewed interest in the use of high-altitude airships as a means of providing economical coverage for these services in developing countries.
High-Altitude Airship Experience
- Lockheed Martin
ILC Dover supported Lockheed Martin in the development of HAA vehicles, including HALE-D (High Altitude Long Endurance Demonstrator).
- Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
ILC Dover supported DARPA’s Integrated Sensor is Structure high-altitude program, which is a disruptive Command and Control, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C2ISR) providing an extremely large dual-aperture radar capability integrated in a fully autonomous stratospheric unmanned airship.
