Inflatable impact attenuation systems (airbags)
ILC Dover is a world leader in flight proven inflatable impact attenuation systems with 3 successful landings on Mars and numerous test programs on earth.
ILC Dover has decades of experience in the design and manufacture of inflatable airbag systems. Our most notable accomplishments are the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Exploration Rover (MER) airbags which helped land the Sojourner, Spirit & Opportunity rovers on the surface of Mars to help expand knowledge of the planet. In addition to planetary landing systems, we designed and fabricated airbag landing systems to safely return manned and unmanned space systems to the surface of earth. This includes airbags for the Crew Exploration Vehicle Orion, and the Advanced Launch System.
We have also participated in a number of related development projects including Mars Netlander & Scout airbag systems, a Space Shuttle cargo bay airbag system, and spacecraft righting airbags. Our work in airbag system includes vented & non-vented designs. Many of the vented designs have the capacity to land extremely heavy vehicles weighing over 20 tons.
ILC has proven systems & processes that ensure the level of quality, reliability & safety to meet all spaceflight requirements. We perform the design & systems engineering, manufacture and test on site and at remote locations such as the NASA Plumbrook Facility. Our engineers & technicians also assisted in system testing and integration in the flight vehicle. We routinely apply our materials expertise in textiles, coatings and protective layers to create robust autonomous and human-rated systems.
Our manufacturing capabilities are wide ranging and proven in flight programs.
