ILC Dover’s Sentinel XT™ Clear PAPR System is a specific Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) designed for reliable respiratory protection in pharmaceutical environments. As a battery-powered Air Purifying Respirator, it uses a blower to draw in ambient air, passes it through approved filters, and delivers clean, filtered breathing air to the clear hood through a breathing tube helping support comfort, visibility, and consistent performance.

Greater Visibility

The Sentinel XT™ Clear hood provides a 320-degree field of view to support comfort and help reduce claustrophobia. For respiratory protection, the system is rated with an APF of 1,000 when used as a complete, NIOSH-approved PAPR configuration (including the approved hood, filters, and airflow settings) under your facility’s respiratory protection program. Because this is a loose-fitting hood Respirator, it does not require the same fit testing used for tight-fitting facepiece respirators focus instead on correct hood selection, secure attachment, and completion of the required operational checks to support consistent respiratory protection.

 

Minimal Restriction

A clear, nonrestrictive hood supports comfort and productivity while maintaining reliable respiratory protection. Before each use, inspect the hood and breathing tube for cleanliness, integrity, and secure connections, and confirm the breathing tube is properly seated and routed without kinks or airflow restriction. After use, clean, disinfect, and dry the hood and components as directed in ILC Dover instructions, then store them properly and replace any worn or damaged parts to help keep your PAPR system performing as intended.

  • Broad comfort and visibility: The clear hood supports a wide field of view (320-degree view) to help reduce claustrophobia.
  • Facial hair and/or head coverings: A loose-fitting hood design can support comfort for users who wear facial hair and/or head coverings.
  • Consistent breathing comfort: The system delivers filtered air to the hood through the breathing tube and filter configuration defined in the Sentinel instructions.

 

  • Tight facial sealing coverage: A full-face configuration uses a face seal to cover the eyes and face along with the breathing zone.
  • Fit-testing and seal verification: Because full-face facepieces rely on a tight seal, they may require fit testing and seal checks as defined by your respiratory protection program.

Note: A loose-fitting hood respirator is not the same as a tight-fitting facepiece that relies on fit testing. For Sentinel XT™ Clear, focus on correct hood selection, secure attachment, unobstructed breathing tube routing, and completion of the required operational checks.

Quick decision rule

If your priority is visibility and comfort with a loose-fitting hood, Sentinel XT™ Clear is designed for that use case. If your priority is tight facial sealing and full-face coverage, you’ll typically evaluate a full-face PAPR configuration that is approved for your specific hazards and compatible with your program requirements.

What Is a Full-Face Powered Air Purifying Respirator?

A full-face powered air-purifying respirator is a battery-powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) that draws in ambient air, passes it through approved filters, and delivers filtered breathing air to a tight-fitting facepiece that covers the eyes, nose, and mouth.

When comparing Sentinel XT™ Clear to a full-face PAPR, the main differences are how the system seals to the face and what coverage it provides:

 Sentinel XT™ Clear uses a loose-fitting clear hood (not the same fit-testing approach as tight-fitting facepieces). Full-face PAPR facepieces typically require fit testing and seal verification.

A hood design can be more accommodating for facial hair/head coverings than a tight-seal facepiece.

Full-face configurations are designed to cover the eyes and face via the facepiece. A hood provides respiratory protection and visibility, but it is not the same as a full-face facepiece seal.

Important selection reminder

Respiratory approval does not automatically mean the system provides the same level of eye-and-face impact, splash, or chemical protection. Always select equipment based on your hazard assessment and the specific product approvals for the task.

Proper cleaning and maintenance help support reliable respiratory protection and consistent breathing performance from your PAPR/Respirator system. Follow ILC Dover’s Sentinel XT™ instructions for your specific hood, filter cartridges, blower, battery, and accessories.

 

Before cleaning 

  • Power down the PAPR and remove the hood/assembly according to your facility procedure.
  • If the hood or components are visibly contaminated, handle them as required by your site’s exposure control plan.

Hood, breathing tube, and components

  • Inspect first: Check the clear hood and breathing tube for cleanliness, integrity, cracks, clouding, and secure connections.
  • Check routing: Confirm the breathing tube is not kinked or damaged and that connections are secure.
  • Clean/disinfect as directed: Clean, disinfect, and dry the hood and components using only the methods and products specified in the ILC Dover instructions.
  • Dry storage: Ensure components are fully dry before storage to help prevent odor and degradation.

Blower, battery, belt, and harness

  • Blower exterior: Wipe the blower exterior as directed (do not immerse unless the instructions explicitly allow it).
  • Battery care: Charge the Li polymer battery using the approved charger and follow the recommended charging/storage guidance.
  • Harness/belt: Inspect the waist belt or back harness for wear and proper function; clean according to the accessory instructions.

Filters / cartridges

  • Replace on schedule: Use the facility-required filter/cartridge replacement interval and replace sooner if breathing resistance increases or exposure conditions change.
  • Verify correct cartridge type: Ensure you’re using the approved cartridge type for your hazard assessment and the Sentinel XT™ Clear configuration.

Replace damaged or expired parts

Replace any worn, damaged, or expired components (hood, breathing tube, cartridges, battery, or harness parts) rather than attempting repairs.

Tip: If you’re unsure which cleaning/disinfection method applies to your exact Sentinel XT™ configuration, confirm with the ILC Dover instructions for your hood and cartridge type before proceeding.

Respirator cartridge use and limitations
Use the correct filter/cartridge type for your specific hazard assessment and the approved Sentinel XT™ Clear configuration. An Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) is not intended for oxygen-deficient atmospheres or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) conditions unless your program and equipment are specifically approved for that use. Replace cartridges on your facility’s required schedule (and sooner if breathing resistance increases, cartridges are damaged, or exposure conditions change) to help maintain reliable respiratory protection.
